Local singers try singing English songs

Young listeners are good at English and they like hearing their favourite local singers sing English songs. That reason urges singers to sing English songs.

Sixteen English songs in the My Secret Passion show in April at Khong Ten nightclub in HCM City were said to be an experiment by singer Duc Tuan, but the show attracted many people. The nightclub was full and most of the listeners were Vietnamese, while Duc Tuan had aimed to serve foreigners.

The success of this first show encouraged Tuan to organise a second show on June 11 and he said he planned to turn “My secret passion” into a brand name for English-song shows.

Vietnamese singers are singing two kinds of English songs: famous English songs in the world and English songs written by Vietnamese authors.

Duc Tuan acted as a representative of the first kind when he sang original English songs on his shows and released an English album in Canada and Hong Kong. Another singer, Hien Thuc, is about to issue an album of world-famous children’s songs.

Some pop stars have added several English songs onto their albums, for example My Tam with “Hurt so much” on her “Return” album. In his upcoming live show named QD08: My Love, Quang Dung will perform some famous English love songs.

Musicface, owned by song writer Duc Tri, often adds English songs written by Vietnamese authors onto the albums of singers under its aegis. Musicface is producing two English albums for Ho Ngoc Ha and Pham Anh Khoa which will be released very soon.

Those who introduce their albums online like Quoc Bao, Mai Khoi and Thuy Tien have English singles to introduce to foreign listeners. Diva Hong Nhung often sings her own English song entitled “My Dream” while Phuong Vy sings his, “Leave me alone”.

Some Vietnamese singers performed English songs ten years ago but it is not until recently that singing English songs has become a movement. According to song writer Nguyen Ngoc Thien, it is quite easy now to ask for permission to sing foreign songs in Vietnam. The royalty is also reasonable so Vietnamese singers can sing English songs legally.

Aiming at overseas markets, some local singers perform English songs written by Vietnamese authors and it is considered one way to market Vietnamese music to the world. “Can foreigners love Vietnamese songs if they don’t understand any word in Vietnamese songs? It is good and necessary for Vietnamese singers to sing English songs,” said song writer Quoc Bao.

However, Quoc Bao said only 2% of Vietnamese singers can sing English songs well.
